Hard Bumpy Squash - Knowledgebase Question

My crooked neck yellow squash has begun to turn dark orange, hard and bumpy and "gourd-like". They were planted in late March. They produced very well in late May and early June. I still have lots of flowers and fruits, but they are no longer the smooth skinned, light yellow, tender treats that they once were. What's the problem?

Your summer squash is overmature! Pick off those that have turned dark yellow and bumpy, or the plant will stop producing additional fruits. Crook neck squash should be picked when it's still lemon-yellow and the flesh is tender. Try to keep them harvested when they reach 5-6 inches in length, so they'll be tasty and tender.
