My wife has me attempting to turn 1/2 acre of the Mojave Desert (sand, sand, sand & wind with NO humidity) into the "New Improved Garden of Eden". My question is: would divorce be cheaper in the long run?

Divorce probably won't be cheaper, and certainly wouldn't be as rewarding as gardening! A half acre can be daunting. Why not start out small and increase the size of the garden as you have time, energy and money? Begin by staking out a reasonable garden bed and spreading 4-5 inches of organic matter over the top. Dig or rototill the compost, aged manure, leaf mold or peat moss into the soil to a depth of about 8 inches. Plant, cover bare soil with mulch to suppress weeds and help hold in moisture. Once the site is up and producing crops or flowers, extend the garden by staking out another area and repeating the process. When you start harvesting veggies and cutting flowers for the table, you'll be inspired to increase your gardening space. If you're the sort of person who needs instant rewards, plant quick-maturing veggies like lettuce and radishes. Good luck with your new project!
