The backyard next to the fence slopes. It's covered with grassy weeds. Is there a ground cover that is colorful year-round is California and can choke this grass?

Your new groundcover will thrive if you first prepare the planting area by removing the grassy weeds and loosening the soil by tilling or digging. Once the site is prepared, you can plant Vinca minor, Carpet Bugle (Ajuga), Arabia (Rockcress), Carpobrotus (Ice Plant), Corydalis, Pink Panda Strawberry, Gazania, Phlox subulata, or Houttuynia cordata. Each of these plants has seasonal color and will grow nicely on a slope. As it matures and fills in, the plants will effectively shade the soil and suppress the growth of weeds. Be sure to provide adequate water to your new groundcover until it becomes established.
