Round Up does not move in the soil the way some other herbicides do so I don't think spraying it near the tree trunk and roots would do any damage under normal circumstances, but overspray or drift can certainly affect the leaves. If only some of the leaves dried up, it was probably overspray or droplets of the chemical carried on the wind into the canopy of the tree. If all the leaves on the tree dried up, there's a root problem. If you applied a lot of Round Up and then watered or it rained, it is possible that the chemical was transported down to the roots of the tree as the water or rain soaked into the soil. At this point there is nothing much you can do except wait and watch and hope for the best!
