|I have a raised flower bed (contained by bricks) that is 3x7x2 and wish to plant your Giant California Mix Calla Lilies in it. With the Lilies, I would like to plant something else along the inside border. How many calla lilies should I purchase for the amount of space I have. Can I plant them now? Any suggestions on what to plant around the inside border that is appropriate for my planting zone?
|Calla lilies grow from rhizomes that should be planted 4-6 inches deep and 1-2 feet apart. They will grow in sun to partial shade in rich, moist soil. For a bed the size of yours, a maximum of 10 Calla clumps should be used. To compliment the Callas consider plants with variegated leves to contrast with the dark green foliage of the Callas. Caladium or Lamium or Coleus would be good companions. Or you might try brightly flowering annuals or perennials like impatiens or fuchsias.|
