After the flowers have faded, cut back the flower and the stem, but leave the foliage until it turns yellow and shrivels up. The foliage provides the bulb with the energy it needs to develop a new flower next year. If the leaves look unattractive, fold them down and lay them on top of the soil, but don't remove them until they've turned dry and brown. Then cut, or gently pull them away from the bulb, and put them in the compost pile.
