Dogwoods are understory trees and will winter over best if they are protected by taller trees. If yours were planted out in the open, winter weather may have killed them. Droughty conditions are also hard on dogwoods. They need a moist, humusy, rich soil in which to grow. If you replace your trees, be sure to water them deeply once each week during the growing season. Good luck with your landscape.
