Slugs and snails drawn to hostas. They work at night so you won't see them but you might see their slime trails on or near the plants. You can stop them by sprinkling diatomaceous earth on the soil around the plants, by setting traps (commercially available or use a saucer filled with stale beer) or by handpicking them at night. (Drop them into soapy or salty water.) Commercial slug baits are also available. I use the iron based bait called Sluggo. It is effective and it is harmless to wildlife and humans. Good luck with your hostas.
