I planted two strawberry plants in my garden. I need ideas on how to raise the plant off the dirt so that the strawberries can grow & ripen instead of rotting in the soil. Also, what's the best cover that I can make so the birds can't get to them. Thank you.

Now that your strawberry plants are happily growing in the ground, the best way to keep the fruits clean is to place a layer of straw around the plants. This will make a nice mulch to help keep the soil moist and will also provide a nice clean area for the berries. If birds are finding the berries, I'd cover the plants with birdnetting. You can make hoops out of wire coathangers and drape the bird netting over the hoops, or you can drive stakes into the ground around the plants and drape birdnetting over the stakes. Make sure the birdnetting is several inches up off the plants so the birds cannot peck through the netting to the berries. Hope you have a great harvest!
