I have an astilbe that was planted a year ago. It bloomed nicely several weeks ago, and now the plumes are fading. If I deadhead them will they produce more plumes?

I'm afraid they only bloom once per year, but you can extend the bloom period by providing them with the right kind of care. They appreciate a rich, humusy soil in partial shade. Deadhead the plants when they are through blooming and then fertilize with a mild, balanced fertilizer. Divide plants every 3 years or so to keep the plants blooming vigorously. Enjoy!
