A contact vegetation killer such as Round Up will kill the grass, roots and all. There is a waiting period before replanting so check the label and follow the directions. Ajuga, or carpet bugle, is a great ground cover. It will grow in full sun or part shade, can be easily contained if it tries to grow out of bounds and will develop beautiful spikes of blue flowers in late spring or early summer. I just mow the groundcover down with a lawnmower after the flowers are spent, but it isn't necessary. The spent flower spikes eventually die and disappear. Best wishes with your new groundcover!
