Every spring, my dianthus explodes into a beautiful array flowers. After a couple of weeks the flowers leave and it rarely produces more than a few flowers throughout the summer. It is about 3 years old and in a pot on my patio. How can I encourage flower growth all summer long?

Heat stress has a lot to do with lack of flowers with your dianthus. They prefer cooler temperatures so they will bloom best in the spring and again in the fall. Since they bloom on new growth you can cut the plants back by half after their first flush of blooms and that may prompt a second flush of blooms. As long as you cut them back after each bloom cycle you can probably coax them into at least some blooms during the summer months. But don't expect fantastic flowering while the weather is hot.
