Bearss lime is a wonderful lime tree for backyard growing. Although it is considered a dwarf, it will eventually reach about 12' tall and wide so be sure to provide adequate room in your landscape for it to stretch out. It will grow best in a partly shady site. Choose one that receives morning shade and about 4 hours of afternoon sun, or at least filtered late afternoon sunshine. Unlike most other citrus trees, your lime tree will need some shade during the day. You'll want to amend the soil prior to planting so that the area drains well. Don't just amend the planting hole but dig a hole 3-4 times wider than the container (and about as deep) and mix in some compost and sand. Then set your tree in the planting hole and backfill with the amended soil, tamping down as you go. The final step is to water the plant well after planting. Create a water ring around the outer edge of the hole. Not only will this conseve water, but will direct moisture to perimeter roots, encouraging outer growth. Once tree is established, the water ring may be leveled. Studies show that mulched trees grow faster than those unmulched, so add a 3"" layer of pinestraw, compost, or pulverized bark over backfilled area. When you water, fill the watering basin, allow to drain, then fill it a second time. Once a week should be all your new tree needs. You can feed your tree next spring with a specialized citrus food, in amounts as recommended on the package. Good luck with your new tree!
