What happens to zinnia seeds when they have not been planted in 1 or more years?

All seeds, when stored properly, will retain some viability for several years. Heat, light and moisture are the enemies of seed so if you store leftover zinnia seeds in a sealed jar in a cool, dark place, they should remain viable for about 3 years.
