We laid sod (professionally done) in our small yard a 1.5 months ago. (san diego, by the way...) We now have dozens of bees who hang around in and around teh grass ALL day. We can find no hive. We've tried sprays to no avail. HELP! We have 2 young sons and can no longer go outside!

It's possible that you are dealing with ground nesting bees and while you cannot find hives, there are probably solitary holes in the lawn where the bees are nesting. While they like the moisture present in your turf, they will evacuate the area if you keep it wet. An alternative is to use a pyrethrum based spray on the lawn. Your local cooperative extension office may have a list of current control measures registered for use in California. Contact UC Davis cooperative extesion, 5555 Overland Ave, San Diego, CA 92123-1200 phone (858) 694-2845. Hope they can offer more solutions!
