Why are Zinnias not hardy?

Zinnias are annual plants. As such they grow, flower and set seeds, then die. If you cut off the spent flowers they will develop more flowers but they will eventually die when the weather becomes too cool for them. They are genetically programed to grow for a certain length of time and then die.
