CEDAR HILL, Te
|I live about 20 miles southwest of Dallas, TX in the suburb of Cedar Hill, Tx. I have 5 five red-tips along my back fence that I am attempting to grow very tall for privacy. When should I prune them for maxium growth? I planted them in 2005.

|Spring is the best time to prune photinia. This is when new growth is beginning and pruning will encourage even more new growth. It will also help keep the shrubs thick and dense with foliage. You can use hedge trimmers to give them a more formal look or you can just prune back random branches. Be sure to prune the tops of the shrubs, too, so they will grow lots of new upright stems.
