My lawn is mostly weeds and clover and I would like to use a herbicide. Usually I avoid or severely limit my use of such chemicals. Is there anything safer than the standard 2,4,D based product? I'm concerned because I have young childred who play in, touch, and roll in the grass. I have concerns about the environment, too.

Your concerns are shared by many gardeners. There is an organic herbicide made from corn gluten meal that kills weeds in turfgrass and has the added bonus of supplying nitrogen. It's called WOW and is available through Gardens Alive, 5100 Schenley Pl, Lawrenceburg, IN 47025. Their phone number is (812) 537-8650. As with all products, read and follow the label directions.
