There are lots of large shrubs/small trees that you might grow: Cordia boissieri native to Mexico and Texas with the common name of Texas olive. Eucalyptus spathulata or Narrow-leafed gimlet. Fortunella (Kumquat), or any of the dwarf variety of citrus if you can protect them during the winter months). Callistemon citrinus - bottlebrush tree, or weeping bottlebrush, Laurus nobilis - sweet bay,
Prunus cerasifera 'Atropurpurea' - purple leaf plum,
Prunus cerasifera 'Purple Pony' - dwarf purple leaf plum, or Sophora secundiflora - Texas mountain laurel. Hope one of these suggestions is perfect for your garden.
