Where should a bird bath be placed in a yard? Protected by trees/shrubs or in the open spaces?

That is a very good question and depends to some extent on which birds you wish to attract and which birds are in your local neighborhood. For the most part, however, birds like to be able to perch safely nearby the birdbath (as in shrubbery or small trees) with a good view of the area to check for possible dangers and predators, then bathe with a natural protective open space (as in open lawn) between them and any possible hiding places/attack routes for their predators. Different birds have different comfort zones and preferences, so it is hard to state a hard and fast rule. In my experience, it is best to provide several birdbaths in different locations and then see which one(s) your favorite birds like best.
