I don't know if you can save the tree. Once a split develops it becomes an attractive home for insect pests. And, it tends to hold water, which contributes to rot, which again attracts insects and diseases. You can try cutting away half of the tree, along with the hollowed out area to save the tree, but I think the best approach is to completely remove the tree and replace it with a healthy specimen. When you have trees with split trunks or branches, they usually decline over the years. Pruning can help you avoid this but you need to prune as soon as you recognize the splits are developing. Wish I had more encouraging news for you!
