I planted 5 Hetz Columnar Junipers on 07/03/09 in CT 06385 in good soil. They are 6' tall and real green with little balls on them. Should I spray some kind of bug/mite tonic on them anytime soon? When should I feed them? How much do they grow per year? Are they disease free?

Hetz Columnar Junipers are considered moderately fast growing (expect about 6" of new growth per year). You won't need to feed your new shrubs until next spring. At that time you can feed with a slow release evergreen fertilizer such as an 8-8-8, in amounts as recommended on the fertilizer package. Evergreens are prone to spidermites but instead of using an insecticide you only need to hose the plants off every 3-4 weeks during the hot summer months. Spidermites like dry, dusty places so simply hosing off the foliage, especially the center of the plant, will discourage spider mites and also help keep your shrubs looking neat and clean. As long as they are in well draining soils, they should remain healthy and should thrive in your landscape. Enjoy!
