You can grow practically anything in containers! For the most success, choose containers with adequate drainage holes in the bottom and fill them with moistened potting soil. The size of the pot should be about one-third as tall as the mature size of the plant. In other words, if you plant a shrub that will reach 3' at maturity, the pot should be at least one foot tall. For annuals and perennials the containers can be smaller because they have smaller root systems. The only other concern about growing plants in containers is that they may dry out quickly, especially during the hot summer months, and if the container is in the hot sunshine on a concrete patio, the roots of the plants can become overheated. Be sure to check for watering needs at least once a day until you are familiar with how thirsty your plants are so you can keep them well hydrated. Other than the above cautions, just choose the plants that appeal most to you - and enjoy!
