|There are both hardy and tropical hibiscus. Hardy hibiscus, also called Rose of Sharon, has dull green leaves and is hardy in Illinois. Tropical hibiscus has glossy green leaves and will die if exposed to freezing temperatures. You'll need to determine which type of hibiscus you are growing in order to determine whether or not it can remain outdoors this winter.
