|We are here in Las Vegas at a small resort that has Northern exposure and mostly a pot/planter garden in our pool area and Porte Cochere main entrance. Would you please recommend shrubs, plants and possibly flowers that will grow in the dark with desert heat and in pots/planters. Thank you!!!|
|Lots of plants will grow in the shade in Las Vegas. Here are just a few ideas. The University of Nevada Las Vegas Cooperative Extension office (8050 Paradise Rd Ste 105, Las Vegas, NV. Tel: 702-222-3130). will have brochures if you need more ideas. Caladiums: For a beautiful array of color, use fancy-leafed caladiums. Their heart-shaped, heavily veined leaves come in numerous striking variations of pink, red, green, silver and white. Another shady beauty with lots of color is impatiens. It blooms continually until frost, with shades of pink, salmon, orange and white. Hosta or plantain lilies make a welcome addition to any shady garden. The heart-shaped leaves may be bright, dark green or variegated. Coleus: Under shady conditions, coleus offers incredible diversity of foliage colors, shapes and sizes that becomes lost under the sun. Leaves may be velvet, rough, crinkled, deeply notched or rounded. They may be in solid color or several colors, in varying shades of pink, red, bronze, yellow, maroon and green. And don't forget primula. It comes in a rainbow of colors -- white, pink, yellow and orange. Few flowering plants are as spectacular as begonias, and they, too, grow in the shade. Vibrant flowers appear until frost, in colors ranging from vivid red, fluorescent orange and bright yellow to pastel apricot, pink and pure white.
Best wishes with your landscape!
