| I need to select two trees for my east facing front yard which will need low water. Roots will be a concern also since one will be near the sewer line, the other will be between a driveway and the neighbors garage- about 10' diameter. I will park next to it. I am about 25 miles NE of Los Angeles; summer 90-105, winter lowest 30 degrees. I don't like the desert look. I will need to walk under both. |

Foliage is interesting with two heart shaped lobes that close up in evening. Cercis canadensis, the Eastern Redbud is a deciduous tree, round-headed, but with horizontally tiered branches with age. Rich green leaves with pointed tips, Small, rosy-pink flowers cover bare branches in spring. Forest Pansy variety has striking heart-shaped leaves but needs partial shade in our hot areas. Crape Myrtle is another deciduous tree or multiple trunked tree. Spreads as high and as wide. Spring foliage, light green, tinged bronze red. Mature leaves glossy green. Fall foliage, yellow to orange-red. Crinkled, crepe-like flowers in rounded, slightly conical clusters, red, rose, rose-orchid, purple, soft pink & white blooms July-September.
