Spiderplants send out offshoots which have both roots and leaves. The theory is that wherever these little offshoots touch the ground they will root and become new plants. Obviously if your spiderplant is in a hanging basket these little offshoots won't be able to root in the ground. So the short answer to the "pods" is that they are probably encapsulated roots. The pods will open to expose the roots if you give them enough time. Good luck with your plants.
