At the bottom, there were two beautiful new growths from where we made a cutting. They had leaves and looked healthy. Then, very quickly, they shriveled and died (see pic). Any idea as to cause?

The photos are terrific! Phyllosticta draconis is the most common cause of the reddish brown blotches near the bases of the leaves. Phyllosticta is a fungal disease. It is impossible to diagnose with certainty, though, even with awesome photos. You may want to take an affected leaf to your local cooperative extension office for microscopic exam.
