Although citrus trees are not usually thought of as being pruned, you might be surprised to learn that citrus growers regularly trim their trees for ease in harvesting. You can prune your tree back by about a third without harming it. Wait until you've harvested your fruits and then shorten all the branches. Once you've done that you can selectively remove some of the inner branches to thin out the canopy. You won't hurt your tree as long as you are not too aggressive when removing branches and leaves. In fact, you might want o prune it back a little this fall and a little more next spring. |
