Thank you for answering my last question. I have a suspicion that the problem is compacted soil. When I walk on the lawn some parts feel soggy under my feet. How do I rectify compacted soil?

You can aerate your lawn by renting a power aerator. A core aerator will remove one inch by three inch plugs from the lawn. Leave the plugs on the lawn and they will dissolve in rain or water from the sprinklers. After aerating spread a thin layer of sand or compost over the area and water it in well. The sand or compost plus the soil from the plugs will work their way down into the holes left by the plugs which will give water a place to drain and grass roots a place to expand. After aerating you can overseed your entire lawn to help fill in thin or bare spots. Best wishes with your lawn!
