Most rhododendrons grow best in the shade and their leaves are subject to sunburn if they get hot afternoon sunshine. If the areas are burned from the sun they will be a crispy brown. Other problems with rhodies include fungal diseases. In this case the brown areas will still be soft and pliable. If you suspect a fungal disease, clip off the affected leaves to stop the spread of the disease. Once you've done that, take a few to your local cooperative extension office, Master Gardener Clinic, or well staffed nursery for help with diagnosis. Once you know the cause of the problem you can take preventative steps. Good luck with your rhodie!
