When is the right time to pick a tomato? I was told by a friend that you should pick your tomatoes when they are light red, not dark or fully ripened. The theory he gave was that the sole purpose of a plant was to make seeds, so when it has made enough seeds it stops growing and dies.

could be kept growing for years under the right conditions, as in a greenhouse. In time I suppose they would decline in vigor and perhaps exhaust themselves, but in my garden they keep on blooming and making more tomatoes as long as they are healthy; there are tomatoes on the vines right up until frost kills them.
