I have an Areca palm that is very old and rotting away. We tried to remove the rotted wood, but the whole thing is dieing and new shoots don't seem to last.It is on the west side of our screen porch, and is very necessary. I also have a beautiful shade garden by it. If I have to take it out, what can I plant there that will grow fast and give the shade I need? Thank you. |
I'm sorry you are losing your Areca palm! For quick cover you might try a vine on a trellis. Otherwise, some fast growing shade trees to consider include cherry laurel, a broadleaf evergreen, the berries attractive to birds and it is a hardy native tree. Or, a green Ash, which is evergreen and will provide year 'round shade. Red maple is deciduous, but it is a rapid growing, hardy native with red flowers, fruit in spring; yed or yellow foliage in fall. Sweetgum and sycamore are two more suggestions. Best wishes with your new tree. |
