Believe it or not, most insects have specific plants they prefer. Loopers prefer members of the cabbage family so they feast on broccoli, cabbage, collards, etc. They don't much care for basil. However, this time of year is prime time for tiny little insects called flea beetles. They love basil leaves and will munch little holes in them. Because you'll be consuming the leaves of your basil it's best not to use chemicals to deter the pests. Try spraying the leaves with plain water - both upper and lower sides of the leaves - once a day. This usually rinses away any pests and their eggs and will deter them from spending too much time feeding. Best wishes with your basil!
