a friend gave me a bleeding heart plant this year which I planted late spring. The leaves are turning yellow on the plant. What to do?

What you describe is perfectly normal for Dicentra (bleeding heart). These plants grow early in the spring, flower, and then die down in about mid-summer. The roots will rest during the fall and winter and then will wake up and resprout next spring. Enjoy your beautiful new plant!
