Cracks can be caused by winter weather. Sometimes trees can overcome the damage but other times the cracks can expose the tree to insects and disease problems or interrupt the flow of the vascular system. If the tree is valuable it may be worth the cost to have a certified arborist make an onsite evaluation. He/she can recommend treatment or control of the problems. Good luck with your apple tree.
