How do I make my bougainvillea bloom throughout the summer months. When I first bought it -- it bloomed throughout the summer. However, it is about 3 years old and has only bloomed once this summer. Any suggestions?

If your bougainvillea is planted in full sunshine, it might need a little shade during the hottest afternoons of the summer. If it's growing well but not blooming, pruning it back will force new flowering wood. Don't be afraid to prune some of it all the way down to the ground. Nip back some of the stems in the early spring to mid-summer to encourage new flowering wood. Pruning should get your plant's attention and make it burst forth with color.
