I had nice green grass growing, I think I over fertilized and or fertilized to late ( august ), and is mostly dead, brown straw like, it can be raked up easily. How and what should I do to get grass growing again.
thanks Dave in RI.

If you did overfertilize you may not be able to get your lawn growing again before winter weather arrive. Excessive salts from fertilizer can burn not only the blades, but the roots as well. The salts will remain in the soil for several weeks before they are washed out by rain or water from the sprinklers so any new grass seed you apply may not sprout. You can try flooding the area repeatedly to leach out the excess salts then overseed your lawn and cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost. You might want to do a test patch to see if the seeds sprout before broadcasting seeds all over the lawn. If the seeds sprout in 7-10 days, you can safely overseed your lawn. Good luck with your project!
