Ragged Leaves on Lilac - Knowledgebase Question

My Lilac bush looks healthy but the leaves are ragged with holes and torn ends. Does not look like a bug problem but perhaps soil. Is there something I should add to the soil? Thanks

It isn't too likely that soil conditions will cause the leaves to look battered. Lilac leaves are rather tender and can be torn in the wind, especially in hot weather. Of course it won't hurt your plant to spread 3-4 inches of organic matter such as compost beneath the plant. As the organic matter decomposes it will release nutrients into the soil. Organic matter will also help suppress weeds and slow water evaporation. Enjoy your garden!
