I have two large hydrangeas near my front steps and would like to trim them back some. When is the best time to do this?

Hydrangeas are traditionally pruned in the spring, just as new growth begins. It's a little late in the growing season to prune yours now, unless you wait until after the first heavy freeze and after the plant has gone dormant. You can prune it any time it is in dormancy.
