Purchased blackberry plant at home depot in spring. No blooms, 4 canes now. Rumors say 1, don't let bloom 1st year (has none anyway? 2, mow down before winter all new in spring. 3, wrap for winter winds, do not cut ever? I'm lost, different breeds different answers, I have your THDB0459. Help. Also, it says |
Blackberries are brambles so they are likely to send their canes in every direction possible. As the 4 main canes mature they will become more rigid and upright. Until then, provide a stake and tie them upright. Blackberries produce berries on the new growth of the season. After your first frost you can prune the canes down by half and make sure they are loosely tied to the stake so they won't whip around in the wind. Next spring new growth will emerge from below the pruning cut and this new growth should flower and fruit. After you have harvested the fruit you can prune the canes back again, or you can wait until after the first frost and cut them back then. As your blackberry plant matures you can selectively prune out the oldest canes to make room for the vigorous new canes. Hope this clarifies things for you. |
