what kind of soil is best for it. why are tips brown on the ends of leaves?

Pygmy date palms will grow in your sandy native soil. In a container, use regular potting soil rather than garden soils. Browning leaf tips can indicate too much water or fertilizer burn. Water thoroughly but allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Best wishes with your palm!
