It's a little too late in the season to prune your privet hedge. Your average first frost date is only 3 weeks away. If you prune now, your privets will develop new growth which will not have a chance to harden off before your first frost. The new growth will die back over the winter months and you'll need to prune the hedges again in the spring. So, I'd put the pruners away for the season and plan one pruning the hedge back in mid-April or the first week of May. Best wishes with your garden!
