|When is the right time to plant bulbs? I live in Northern Virginia. Also, do I have to prep my flower bed before planting? Thanks.

|You can plant your spring blooming bulbs in September or October. I'd remove any vegetation in the bed and dig in some compost or other organic matter prior to planting. After planting your bulbs, spread 2-3 inches of organic mulch over the top of the bed to help suppress weeds. The bulbs will have no trouble growing up through the mulch material. As you see the bulbs emerging, brush the mulch away from the stems and foliage. Enjoy your garden!
