There are about 1,700 subspecies in the genus Solanaceae (Solanum). The family includes tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and nightshade. Not all fruits of the solanaceae family are edible - in fact some are toxic. If you're growing any of the members of this family, make sure the plants are correctly identified before consuming the fruits. Commonly cultivated garden plants, like tomato, eggplant and potato are safe to eat, but many other members of this family are not. 'Cherry Jubilee' is a type of tomato and is edible. Most members of the solanaceae family are tropical in nature, and grow best in a climate that provides a long summer with warm temperatures.
