How close to a foundation can a lilac tree be planted. I'm concerned because Mine is 5ft from the house and I'm worried about roots breaking the poured basement walls.

Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata) can grow 25' high and wide so yours may be too close to your house for healthy growth and for the safety of your foundation. I would move it now while it is small! If you want a lilac as a foundation shrub, choose one of the dwarf lilac bushes such as Miss Kim. It will remain small enough to grow happily 5' from your foundation.
