I have 2 flowering maples planted in the same area. On both plants the edges of the leaves are browning. Is that normal. Do they go dormant?

Abutilion, or flowering maple, is a tender deciduous plant so expect the leaves to fall when the weather gets cold. Browning leaf margins can indicate over watering or over fertilizing. When you water, water thoroughly enough to leach excessive salts down and away from the roots of the plants. Then allow the top half inch of soil to dry out between waterings. This should improve the appearance of the leaves. Best wishes with your flowering maples.
