Crape myrtles flower on the new growth that is produced that season. Wait until early spring to prune your crape myrtles. Pruning encourages new growth, which you don't want at this time of year because of the possibility of frost damage. Pruning in the early spring will encourage new flowering growth. If you lightly prune again, after the flowers are spent, your crape myrtles will reward you with a second flush of bloom later in the summer. Enjoy!
