Blackberry Vines - Knowledgebase Question

I always thought blackberry vines grew like weeds and checking the Q & A library it seems that is everyone else's experience. However, I can not get them to grow after two attempts. Am I bucking a losing battle in my high desert zone (5,000 ft)? If not, how should I amend the soil to give the vines a better chance?
I can get ample water to them and can provide shade if needed.

Thanks

You may be choosing the wrong varieties for your region or your soil may need some amending. Rather than guessing at the growing conditions and varieties, I'll direct you to the following publication on blackberry growing authored by New Mexico State University. It's comprehensive and lists the characteristics of the best blackberry varieties for your elevation: http://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/_h/h...

Hope this information is helpful!
