I have a water softener on my household water. Can this cause any problems in watering my tomato plants or other vegetable plants?

In a word, yes. The "salts" are bad for plants. It also costs you money for the softening chemicals every time you use it to run the hose. Most gardeners have a separate outdoor water line put in the system prior to the softener. This is much better for your plants and much easier on your pocketbook in the long run.
